Tips for Removing Ice Dams

In the cold winter months, ice dams are a problem that many homeowners face. Here are some tips for dealing with this pesky problem!

Ice dams if left untreated can damage and even destroy shingles, gutters, and in extreme cases, cause leaks inside of your home.

Use a roof rake to remove snow and ice in a downwards motion; not side to side. Sweeping side to side can damage or dislodge your shingles. Never use sharp objects to remove ice and snow from your roof.

Always use calcium chloride to melt ice and snow from your roof. Rock salt and sodium chloride can cause detrimental damage to your roof.

Simply create a channel for drainage on your roof by filling a nylon stocking with calcium chloride. This will quickly, safely and effectively help to drain the ice on your roof!
